Portugal - Sintra and the Arrabida Mountains

On a combination of quiet country roads and smooth surfaced dirt roads we explore by bike some of the loveliest areas that east and west Portugal has to offer.

Following our flights into Lisbon and transfer to nearby Sintra our cycling begins following a night in the Cascais Bay area of this picturesque town. This initial day’s biking explores Sintra itself before we
transfer to Setubal at the end of the day.

From here we explore the Arrabida Mountains, before arriving at the most traditional of Portuguese villages Monsanto, famed for its strangely constructed houses and ghost like castle, which is reached after time at the lagoon of Idanha-a-Nova.

The next highlight is the old village of Castelo de Vide where we take time out to visit the castle and ancient Jewish quarter. Our riding concludes with a cycling day to forever remember. Magnificent views, roman ruins, pre-historical sites, winding narrow roads sided by ancient stoned walls and the hill of Marvão always on the horizon.

Marvão is beautifully situated on the top of a huge granite hill and is a overlooked by a 13th century castle. This is where we stay within the walls, at a small yet very comfortable hotel, a quiet place and the best way to finish our cultural and biking week in Portugal, before our return to Lisbon next day.
